Ok, so I am a mother of two lil boys Andrew 6 and Alex 21 months. My oldest son is technically not my birth child but I have raised him with my husband since he was just three months old. I love my son with all my heart but I have been beyond frustrated the last year or so with issues he has been having in school.

Andrew (my 6 year old), is a very loving child but has not always been an easy child to raise. He has issues with behavior in the past but we have always been able to find a way to overcome those issues. He is very hyperactive and can be a bit moody although the moodiness has gotten better with age. For the most part though he is a good natured kid with a big heart. Well last year Andrew started Kindergarten, my husband and I were very excited but sad at the same time that are oldest baby was growing up. I was hopeful that he would do well in school because he is very bright but a little worried at the time he may have issues with his behavior since he is pretty hyperactive. Well not even three weeks of school had gone by and I was already having confrences with the teacher. I was told he had a difficult time concentrating and was more interested in talking to his peers then listening to his lesson. He had to be moved because his insestent talking was a distraction to the other children. Shortly after he was put on a behavioral plan and almost everyday was coming home with negative marks or a note home from the teacher. At first I became defensive of him questioning whether teacher was singling him out as a problem child and treating him as such without a fair chance of redemption. However i quickly realized this was becoming an issue when regardless of discipline he would continue to do the same things he was told not to just the day before. Everyday I found myself upset, anxious to pick him up from school out of fear what the teacher might tell me. She also informed me that when he did get in trouble during the day most times he would throw a fit which led her to believe he had issues with anger. Now I know first hand my son can be moody and have a temper but usually not unless provoked, well that first year of kindergarten he was suspended three times, twice for hitting a student who didn’t want to play with him. Kindergarten was a stressful year full of tears and mental exhaustion. I tried every method of discipline I could think of although nothing has worked more than a couple of days at most. half way through the year I took him to his pediatrician with my concerns and Andrew was diagnosed with ADHD. I opted not to go on med’s at the time, feeling as though I may find an alternate solution so i wouldn’t have to medicate my son, although I must say i have considered it. I have noticed that although my son is bright he does tend to forget things alot ( ie’ conversations, where he put things) and I have also noticed his work has suffered a bit as well.

Just three weeks ago Andrew started the 1st grade and already I have daily complaints from his new teacher about his constant talking. I’m completely overwhelmed by this and at the fact that once again my son is going to be the problem child of the class. What I would like is some insight from parents that may have gone through this same situation and what has worked for them’ I’m desperate.
